On Broadway, two stars of 'Aladdin' trace their roles all the way to middle school
NEW YORK (AP) — Some years ago, when Sonya Balsara and Adi Roy were in middle school, they were cast in kiddie versions of the musical “Aladdin.” Little did they know it would be very good preparation — for the same roles on Broadway. More than a decade after hitting their marks in the show as pre-teens, Balsara is playing plucky Princess Jasmine and Roy is the show's urchin-turned-titular hero now on Broadway as the Disney hit musical celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Review: ‘The Lion King’ sweeps Pittsburgh audience to African savanna
10 minutes ago Some Broadway musicals have a way of pulling in their audiences as soon as the pit orchestra plays its first bars of music at the start of Act I. The national touring production of Disney’s “The Lion King” — in town for a four-week run through Sept. 29 at the Benedum Center as part of Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh series — is one of those musicals.
This Tony winner’s sets are ready to dazzle audiences at the musical ‘Aladdin’
Bob Crowley’s eye-popping sets will be on full view in Charlotte Sept. 10-29 when Disney Theatrical Productions’ “Aladdin” comes to Belk Theater. Here, male dancers in the touring company perform to “Friend Like Me.” Deen van Meer Courtesy of Blumenthal Performing Arts Sometimes you’re meant to know what Bob Crowley does for a living. Sometimes you aren’t. Sometimes you goggle at his eye-popping, scene-shifting sets; sometimes you scarcely notice them.
Broadway musical ‘Aladdin’ soars into Kennedy Center, through Sep. 7
While Will Smith has put “Aladdin” back on millions of people’s minds this summer, playing the musically, comical Genie of the Lamp in the live-action movie of the 1992 animated fave, the national tour of the Broadway version of the show proves that there’s plenty of love to go around for the title.
It’s their own circle of life. How moms and kids survive touring in Disney’s ‘Lion King’
Buyi Zama as Rafiki in “The Lion King.” Deen van Meer Courtest of Disney Raising kids can be hard work. But touring with them takes it to another level. Disney’s “The Lion King” tour puts parenthood to the test in the circle of life. Several cast and crew members are traveling with their family members, some of whom appear in the theater production. Buyi Zama, who plays Rafiki in “The Lion King” national tour, travels with her husband and nearly 1-year-old daughter, Buhlakani.

Taking on the role of Scar: A Lion King cast member talks performing on Broadway
It is no secret that “The Lion King” is very close to opening its curtains to Springfield. However, what a Broadway performer does before and after the show is not widely known. Spencer Plachy plays the iconic evil uncle Scar in “The Lion King.” He has played this part since October 2018. Plachy went to college in Huntsville, Texas, at Sam Houston State University, where he began performing about 17 years ago. His acting career started with amusement park performances over summers.
Review: 'Aladdin' at the Academy of Music overcomes technical difficulties to earn its place as one of the hottest tickets of the summer
Aladdin transformed the Academy of Music stage into a wondrous display of Disney’s magic. Based on the 1992 animated film of the same name, the musical tells the story of a lovable street urchin who, with the help of a genie, learns that love is not contingent on class. The show opens with a short, but hearty speech from Genie (Michael James Scott), followed by an effortless transition into “Arabian Nights” by the company.
'Newsies' heads to S.L. for 1st of 2 summer visits
The national touring production of Disney’s “Newsies” will begin playing at the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, June 7, and will continue its run in the valley through June 12. But interested audiences hoping to attend the show this time around are out of luck — tickets sold out almost immediately after they went on sale in the fall. “The demand for tickets was unprecedented,” said MagicSpace Entertainment CEO John Ballard, in a news release.
High-stepping ‘Newsies’ delivers with dazzle
Back in the early 1990s, the Disney movie “Newsies” was the little movie that could. Starring a teenage Christian Bale as the head of a turn-of-the-century newsboys strike, the film bombed on its release in 1992.
Preview: Broadway/San Diego brings the touring musical “Newsies” to town
From an acclaimed, sign-language-enhanced revival of “Big River” on Broadway, to a bumpy ride with the La Jolla Playhouse-launched “Bonnie & Clyde,” to a much-gossiped-about stage collaboration with the “Duck Dynasty” people, director Jeff Calhoun has been leading one of the livelier careers in musical theater.Somewhere amid all those projects (and myriad others) over the past decade or so, Calhoun — a Broadway veteran with significant ties to San Diego — picked up a little musical called...
