INTRODUCTION With the recent advances in high-throughput ‘omics’ techniques, sequencing technologies have emerged as key tools for studying microbial communities. To date, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing is by far the most widely used approach to investigate microbial composition dynamics (Starke et al., 2021). It has provided valuable insights into microbial diversity across various environments (Ainsworth et al., 2015; Bachran et al., 2019; Lopez-Fernandez et al., 2015; Van Eesbeeck et al., 2021).
