A comment on Méndez et al. (): ‘Dose-responses for solar radiation exposure reveal high sensitivity of microbial decomposition to changes in plant litter quality that occur during photodegradation’ Decomposing plant material (hereafter ‘litter’) is a major pool in terrestrial biogeochemical cycles. Surface leaf litter is key in dryland ecosystems as it disappears much more rapidly than predicted by traditional temperature, moisture, and litter quality controls (Whitford et al., 1981).
