1 Introduction There is a growing literature on the impact of SES on developmental outcomes, including language and reading in typically hearing children [1]. In low SES families, decrements in language processing such as phonological awareness [2], syntax [3, 4] and vocabulary [5, 6] have been documented [7]. Low SES is known to be a cause of stress and has been associated with deficits in brain development in regions associated with language development [8, 9].
