Challenging 20 mm Hg as the ICP Threshold in Pediatric TBI
Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring has been a cornerstone of neurocritical care since Lundberg and colleagues’ pioneering work in the 1960s using external ventricular drains to continuously record ICP.1,2 In traumatic brain injury (TBI), increased ICP threatens the brain through multiple mechanisms—reduced perfusion pressure leading to ischemia, tissue distortion from mass effect, and herniation and neurodevastation or death if left uncontrolled.
