A Cuomo Comeback Means Higher Rents, More Corruption...
New Yorkers are tired, and we are fed up with the same familiar cycle. The rent goes up, cost of living increases, and those in power keep handing the keys to the city to real estate tycoons and billionaire donors. Now, Andrew Cuomo wants back in. But let’s be clear: four years of Cuomo means four more years of corruption, rising rents, and a New York City hijacked by Trump and a mayor carrying out his dirty work.
Op-Ed | Protecting our city’s checks and balances
Early voting is already underway and, this year, New Yorkers face important choices on both sides of their ballots. After casting votes for the presidency, Senate, State Legislature, and critical congressional races that will determine who controls the House, voters should flip over their ballots to have the chance to shape the future of how New York City is governed for years to come.
Opinion: Confronting the surge in domestic violence homicides in NYC
As council members, women of color and survivors of domestic violence, we are alarmed by the sharp increase in domestic violence homicides. Everyone should be. Despite a general decline in violent crime, domestic violence homicides increased by 29% citywide between 2021 and 2022. The increase is even more alarming in the boroughs we represent: domestic violence homicides increased by 57% in the Bronx and 225% in Brooklyn.
Opinion: The New York City Council must override Adams' vetoes and increase housing voucher access
Last month, New York City reported a grim record that more than 100,000 people were housed in its shelters, with more than 81,000 in traditional homeless shelters. The Adams administration has not provided regular updates with a detailed breakdown of the population, but recent figures show more than 50,000 are longtime New Yorkers who are unhoused - a number that has grown since Mayor Adams took office. New York City’s homelessness crisis is among its greatest challenges.

As pandemic-era SNAP benefits end, New York must create new solutions to fight hunger
As we approach the end of March, countless New York families are experiencing their most difficult visit to the grocery store since the start of the pandemic. That’s because pandemic-era funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) ended this month, reducing monthly food budgets by an average of $82 per person, and up to $250 for working families. Senior citizens on a fixed income could see monthly SNAP allotments reduced to just $23, the minimum allowable in New York State.
Latino New Yorkers Know Governor Hochul is Fighting For Us
Gov. Hochul celebrates Puerto Rico (photo: Kevin P. Coughlin/Office of Governor Kathy Hochul) Every election season, Latinos have the same conversations about how political candidates engage with us. My constituents and I are used to seeing chronic underinvestment despite big promises, and our communities are used to feeling like an afterthought. It’s far too easy for us to succumb to cynicism about our political leaders’ commitment to fighting for us.
NYC’s parks need more green
Each summer, the impacts of severe heat result in the death of 350 New Yorkers. A new report from the city comptroller predicts the number of annual heat-related deaths in New York City could increase to 3,000 in the next 60 years as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe.
Courts and Other Officials Must Act Now to Protect Right to Counsel in Eviction Proceedings
The Place for New York Policy and politics Developed in conjunction with Joomla extensions. Protect housing for the most vulnerable (photo: Michael Appleton/Mayoral Photography Office) Five years ago, New York became the first city in the country to create a right to counsel for low-income tenants facing eviction. Unfortunately, this right is now being hollowed out by the combination of a recent explosion of eviction cases and a shortage of tenants’ rights attorneys.
City must invest in affordable housing to stem the coming wave of pandemic evictions
If you’re a city resident, the color of your skin all but determines how you and your family have fared in the pandemic. Now in the sixth month of the Covid-19 crisis, a heartbreaking but unsurprising pattern has emerged: While wealthier, whiter neighborhoods emptied out to flee to suburban and rural safe havens, Black and brown families have stayed behind and endured disproportionately higher rates of job losses, loss of life and illness.
It’s Time to Bring MTA’s Paratransit Into the 21st Century
The Place for New York Policy and politics Developed in conjunction with Joomla extensions. (photo: MTA) There is a reason why Access-A-Ride is better known as “Stress-A-Ride” for the approximately 170,000 New Yorkers who depend on it. The bill for Access-A-Ride will hit $616 million this year and the MTA is seeking additional funding from the City of New York. It’s mind-boggling to think this service can cost the cash-strapped agency so much for such low-quality service.
Invest in foster youth before another generation is lost
As a teenager, I fought to keep a roof over my head and provide for my newborn child, living at times in a homeless shelter. Years later, as a foster parent, I saw firsthand the challenges and trauma foster youth face as they move from home to home, longing for a sense of stability amid the chaos of life in the foster system. So I understand the challenges New York City’s foster youth face.
