INTRODUCTION The evolutionary history of a species imposes strong constraints on its contemporary ecology (Price, 1994). This is particularly evident with specialised herbivorous insects where phylogenetic constraints dictate the limits of host range. The phylogenetic limits of host range, or the set of all possible plants that can be utilised, is typically referred to as the ‘fundamental host range’ (Braga & Janz, 2021; Schaffner, 2001).
