1 Introduction Accurate assessment of basin-scale water budget is crucial for sustainable water resources planning and management, particularly in water scarce regions such as the Mediterranean Basin under intensifying climatic variability and increasing human demands due to population growth, urban expansion and agricultural escalation. The water budget in a river basin balances the existing supply of water resources with the water demand, and ideally extends this balance to the future.
