Farmland bird species are experiencing population declines globally, although the severity varies depending on species and region (Newton 2004, Nebel et al. 2010, Vickery et al. 2014, Bowler et al. 2019).

INTRODUCTION Aphids are an economically important insect group with over 450 species impacting major cropping systems worldwide (Blackman & Eastop, 2017). Over 100 species of the world's aphid fauna are of significant economic importance, transmitting 50% of all insect-borne plant viruses, and they are drawn largely from one family, the Aphididae (Blackman & Eastop 2017; Katis et al., 2007; Nault, 1997).
