1 INTRODUCTION The basidiomycete fungus Ustilago maydis is a biotrophic, dimorphic plant pathogen that infects maize (Zea mays) or teosinte (Zea mexicana) to complete its sexual life cycle. The infection cycle of U. maydis is initiated by the fusion of two compatible haploid cells, leading to a morphological switch from a yeast-like form to dikaryotic, infectious filaments.
