Foursquare, the smartphone app that gives you points and badges for “checking in” at clubs and convenience stores, is about to reach the one-million-user mark. That’s a big deal. But it’s also a reminder that, try as we might to cover its every move, most of you haven’t tried Foursquare yet.

But try packing a full-course meal, and you’ll be lugging around a drawer’s worth of Tupperware. “The Japanese solved that problem with Bento boxes,” says Dan Black, who co-owns the London-based design firm Black + Blum. Yet, as of mid-2009, there wasn’t an equivalent solution in America. So Black and partner Martin Blum set out to create one.

“I’m a DJ,” says Avicii. “I get the party started.” But six years after he started posting tracks online—back then, most people called him Tim Bergling—Avicii’s breed of DJ is more icon than everyman. At 24, he’s already performed with Madonna, released back-to-back-to-back hit singles (most recently, the bluegrass-tinged “Wake Me Up!”) and played six-figure gigs at clubs all over the planet.
