Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Field on-air reporter for WBLS-WLIB radio in NYC, after I had interned there.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. Nowadays, I don't understand how we ever used typewriters when once you hit that key, it it was a mistake, oh well. Until white-out.

How is social media changing news?

GREATLY. No such thing as waiting for a traditional newscast to come on tv. News, as far as social media has disadvantages as well.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I liked Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore), in Never Been Kissed. Stupid, but cute/funny

What does it mean to be a journalist?

That's it's our job to hold public officials accountable, and honest. Great job, but requires hard work, and a lot of hours.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Me and Technology having a hard time understanding each other, so I don't understand Twitter as much as I should. All politics, all the time.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email, or directly to my producers.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Blackberry and Associated Press Software

What's your favorite social network?

Don't really have a favorite. Sorry, but I do understand the importance of social media.

Who do you wish followed you?

Doesn't really matter. Honestly. One's work speaks for itself.

Why did you become a journalist?

To be a voice for the voiceless. Grew up in NYC Housing Projects, and witnessed a lot of injustices. People need someone to fight for them

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

My NYC HS did not have a newspaper. Didn't know what I wanted to do until my 2nd year of college.Went into journ. to be a Voice for Voiceless

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

By far, interviewing Nelson Mandela during his historic trip to the United States in 1991. (Only Ted Koppell/Nightline beat me with Mandela.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read the Newspapers. On a moment's notice, you have to know what is going on in the world. Be willing to work very hard at your craft.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Extremely Rare that I'm pitched. My producers are pitched and they inform me. They are generally pitched all day long.
