Nashville mayor sees progress as eventful year winds down
Nashville Mayor Larry Dunaway By Don Hall News-Leader staff Larry Dunaway, mayor of Nashville, has had an interesting year. “That water project we’ve been working on—we’re getting very close to getting some work done at the river and at the water plant.” The water project the mayor is talking about involves increasing the volume of water Nashville takes out of the Little Missouri River every day.
Howard County judge to seek another term in 2026
By Don Hall News-Leader staff On Monday, Nov. 3, Howard County Judge Brent Pinkerton announced that he was running for re-election. As most of you know, a “county judge” in Arkansas doesn’t wear robes and sit behind a desk in a courtroom. The judge might have an office in the courthouse, but Judge Pinkerton’s courtroom is a white Chevrolet truck with the Howard County logo on the doors. “Every morning, when I see that logo, it reminds me of who I work for.
Born in Howard County: Business to Baseball
By Don Hall News-Leader staff Most folks around Nashville don’t know that many famous people have come from Howard County. That’s the subject of a new exhibit that opened with a Chamber of Commerce coffee Thursday, Oct. 23, in the E. A. Williams Chapel Museum on Second Street. Susan Nannemann is the curator of the museum and put together the exhibit that honors 10 Howard County natives. “I tried to get a good variety in terms of business, athletics, science, the arts and show business,” she says.
Baymax - Riesiges Robowabohu

Crop dusters hit skies over Southwest Arkansas
By Don Hall News-Leader staff Every year in May, the air in Howard County is filled for a few days with the roar of 1,300-horsepower ugly yellow airplanes flying low and loud. These chunky planes are owned by Crop Doctor, a company in Lake Village in the southeastern corner of the state, and they’re up here to fertilize trees for Weyerhaeuser. Rex Lester, the senior of the two pilots working here this year, explains: “One way to look at it would be we’re providing plant food.

Our southern Idaho farmers need water, too

From barley and wheat to beef and milk, the farmers and ranchers of southern Idaho are the reason so many of us have quality food on our tables. New airport hangars open doors to federal funding
By Don Hall News-Leader staff Howard County Airport is one major step closer to having access to Federal Aviation Administration funds. Key to receiving those funds is having at least 10 aircraft based there. With the opening of the six new hangars at the end of this week, our local airport will have 13 aircraft that call Howard County home. Why should anyone in, for example, the north end of the county care?

The Regeneration Handbook: Healthy groups
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead Although regeneration begins with us as individuals, we eventually have to join with others for it to ripple out into the world. We need other people not only to share in the work but also to shed light on our blind spots and remind us we aren’t alone.

The Regeneration Handbook: From burnout to balance
Even if we’re able to embrace our sense of purpose, that initial spark of inspiration can burn out over time if we’re not careful. If we want to be able to follow our path all the way to its fruition, we must learn how to take good care of ourselves. Although burnout is well-known as a potential pitfall throughout the activist community, many of us keep falling into it again and again. Depending on how you count it, I’ve burned out at least four times over the past two decades.

Introducing The Regeneration Handbook
“We humans appear on the cosmic calendar so recently that our recorded history occupies only the last few seconds of the last minutes of December 31st. We are the legacy of 15 billion years of cosmic evolution. We have a choice: we can enhance life and come to know the universe that made us, or we can squander our 15-billion-year heritage in meaningless self-destruction.” —Carl Sagan, Cosmos We live in extraordinary times.

Howard County airport improvements continue
By Don Hall News-Leader staff Progress is continuing on the improvements at the Howard County airport, County Judge Brent Pinkerton said. The six new hangars are about 70% complete, and five of them are already spoken for by local pilots who have been keeping their airplanes in Hope or Texarkana, according to Kelly Wyndham, administrative assistant to Pinkerton. Why should the average Howard County resident care about that, since most of them never even see the airport?
’73 Mustang finds finds home in Howard County
By Don Hall News-Leader staff Those of us who came of age in the mid-1960s have a life-long love affair with Ford’s pony car. The Mustang started out in mid-1964 as a sexy body on a wimpy Ford Falcon frame (no joke), but it quickly became one of the ultimate muscle cars of the late ’60s and early ’70s. It reached its peak in 1973 just before the Arab oil embargo ended the era of the ground-pounders. Howard County native and resident Jacky Robinson has a 1973 Mustang Mach I with a unique story.

Nashville mayor reflects on first year
By Don Hall News-Leader staff When you start a new job, you expect some good and some bad. Larry Dunaway started a new job as mayor of Nashville in January of 2023. He was in for a big surprise. “A lot of the job is what I expected, but there have been some things that happened that were totally unexpected,” he confesses. The new mayor, who had been a city employee since 1993, thought he knew what he was getting into. Maybe not. First the bad, and then the good.
Creating Practical Alternatives | Don Hall
In March 2020, just as the coronavirus lockdowns were starting here in the US, Transition Movement founder Rob Hopkins published a new post to his blog titled “What Did Sisyphus Dream of?”2 In it, he retells the Greek myth of a man condemned to push a boulder uphill forever and connects it to how many activists feel about working for a better world. We push and push, only to have our hopes tumble back down to the bottom and be forced to begin again.

Storm-damaged roof causing damage at library, police station, courtroom
By Don Hall News-Leader staff The roar of industrial-strength fans, the hum of dehumidifiers, and the unique, not-quite-mildew-yet (but getting there fast!) smell isn’t what you’d expect when you walk into public buildings in Nashville. But during this unusually wet July, in some offices, that’s exactly what you’ll find. According to Kelly Windham, administrative assistant to County Judge Brent Pinkerton, it all began when a hail storm hit Nashville on June 13.

Getting Things Done: Outgoing Nashville mayor reflects on tenure
By Don Hall News-Leader staff The year was 2009, and Nashville had a mayoral election coming up. “I went to a past mayor and tried to get him to run,” says Billy Ray Jones. “When he said ‘No’, then I said, ‘Well, I’m going to.’” “I really decided at the last minute. From O-Line to Opry: Former coach and his steel guitar play Ryman Auditorium
By Don Hall News-Leader staff In 1970, about $2,000 could buy you a really nice used car or truck from York Gary. But instead of buying a car, 17- year-old Nashville native Gene Simmons spent his money on a steel guitar. There was only one problem—he didn’t know how to play it and didn’t know anyone who could. “When I saw my first steel guitar, I knew that I liked it and that was what I wanted to do, I wanted to learn to play,” he says. “When I started, I didn’t know a single soul that played.

Freedom Rings: Going Off to the Wild Blue Yonder
By Don Hall News-Leader staff In a small town in northwest Ohio in 1954, Tom Wesche and a friend, both high school students, decided one day to skip classes. While Tom says he often played hooky, their goal that day was a bit unusual. They went to the friend’s farm, got gasoline out of a tractor, put it in the father’s 2-seat airplane, and proceeded to fly around for the next 45 minutes. That was Tom’s first time in the air, but it certainly wouldn’t be his last.
Freedom Rings: ‘Honored to have served’
By Don Hall News-Leader staff “You are hereby ordered for induction into the Armed Forces of the United States…” If you are a man who turned 18 before 1973, then you probably recognize that sentence—it was how a draft notice began. When Charles Pinkston graduated from college with an engineering degree in 1968, he found out he was being drafted.
Freedom Rings: Who jumps out of perfectly good airplane?
