At the top was an email from Dr. Rachna Shroff, a very dear friend and one of the people who I always look forward to seeing in the many academic trips I take each year. I smiled as I opened it, expecting to hear about a new opportunity, new role, or update on her lovely family she was proud to share. As I read it, my smile changed to confusion.

I’ve written about him before and about the mistake I made: I assumed the woman sitting in front of me was “Lydia.” But she wasn’t — it turned out that the man sitting next to her was Lydia though he had not been called that in a very long time.

Reference 1 Share on Medical oncology is evolving rapidly with the steady — dare I say — relentless announcements of new practice-informing therapies, each one carrying the promise of improving response rates, extending progression-free or recurrence-free survival, and changing trajectories beyond what we were taught even in the most recent textbooks. For someone who trained before the days of immunotherapy and antibody-drug conjugates, it is astounding.
