1 INTRODUCTION Ant-mediated seed dispersal (myrmecochory) is a widespread plant–animal interaction observed in more than 11,000 plant species worldwide (Beattie & Hughes, 2002; Lengyel et al., 2010). In myrmecochorous plants, seeds bear elaiosomes, nutrient-rich appendages that attract ants, and ants transport diaspores (seeds with attached elaiosomes) to their nests and subsequently discard them at nest refuse piles (Edwards et al., 2006; Fokuhl et al., 2012; Gammans et al., 2005).
