I just read the Claude blog on how AI helps break the cost barrier to COBOL modernization. Yes, the blog that moved markets this week. And, honestly, I didn’t think it added much. But maybe I’m missing something? Is analyzing code changing with AI? Sure. Looking back at my notes FROM 2019 from a webinar with Rohit Kelapure , he walked through the different ways teams were analyzing code to identify modernization backlogs. Has AI advanced an accelerated the analysis?

Artificial intelligence is transforming the software delivery life cycle (SDLC). AI is helping to write code, optimize code, review code, debug code and more. And then there’s the code itself: SaaS offerings are incorporating AI in summarization features, chat features and various forms of analysis. Finally, there are the other implications of AI, particularly generative AI (GenAI), on the SDLC, such as observability for non-deterministic AI output.

In some ways, my career has been fed by the transformative shift in computing to the cloud. From considering the networking and performance implications, to the cloud-native application patterns and platforms, to the sociotechnical systems of resilience, I’ve been fortunate to have front row seats to the first wave of Digital Transformation. So much of that first wave has been about consolidating, automating, and abstracting away infrastructure in order to accelerate the pace of software delivery.
