Depression is associated with altered brain bioenergetics. Lower brain phosphocreatine (PCr) levels have been associated with poor outcomes in response to antidepressant treatment, which may be related to high recurrence of depression. PCr is an indicator of high-energy stores and buffering capacity. In rats, creatine monohydrate (Cr) significantly reduces depression-like behavior.
