Cherokees win Wofford tournament amidst successful summer

McMinn County returned cornerstones of its basketball program and it made for a great summer for the Cherokees. The Tribe won a majority of their scrimmages, including a 2-0 day at Maryville their first week and finishing with a 2-0 day at Lee University, including a nail-biting victory over Tyner and comfortable win over East Hamilton.

Oaks playing with Winchester Royals after freshman season at WCU

After a freshman season with some bright spots, Tyler Oaks is playing through the summer to sharpen his craft. The former McMinn Central Charger, who graduated in 2025, is playing with the Winchester Royals this summer in the Valley Baseball League. And in eight appearances, Oaks has three saves, an impressive 1.30 earned run average and 0.85 WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched). At Western, Oaks made his collegiate debut against George Washington Feb.

All area football teams compete in 7-on-7 scrimmage at McMinn

The McMinn Central, Meigs County and McMinn County football programs entered the TSSAA mandated dead period with a bang. Playing in an eight-team field, the Chargers, Tigers and Cherokees matched up with five teams apiece Tuesday evening at Cherokee Stadium. And all three head coaches came away thinking it was a good evening for their respective program.
