Losing ground: Louisiana Legislature reversing Black political power

The history of Black citizens holding elected office in Louisiana is complex. The first Black officeholders were elected soon after the end of the Civil War. Congress passed the Reconstruction Acts in 1867 and they were enforced by the U.S. Army. The laws temporarily took away the voting rights of thousands of citizens who served in the Confederate Army, plus they disqualified any former Confederate officeholders from holding public office. They also granted voting rights to all Black males.
