Jaime Alexander Caballero, M.D., FACC, FSCAI, is an interventional cardiologist based in Tampa, Florida, recognized for his expertise in coronary interventions, structural heart disease, and endovascular therapies. He is the founder of Tampa Heart and Vascular Associates, an independent physician-led practice known for multidisciplinary cardiovascular care and procedural excellence. Dr. Caballero also serves as Collaborative Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the University of South Florida and maintains clinical privileges at Tampa General Hospital, where he participates in advanced cardiovascular procedures and complex patient care.
Dr. Jaime Caballero was born and raised in Colombia, where he demonstrated strong academic promise from an early age. In 1994, he became the National Champion of the Colombian Secondary School Mathematics and Physics Olympics in Bogota, a distinction that highlighted both analytical ability and intellectual discipline. His early interest in science and problem-solving later evolved into a commitment to medicine and patient care.
He pursued his medical education at the University of Tolima School of Medicine, earning his M.D. in 2006. During medical school, he distinguished himself through clinical performance and dedication to patient care. His efforts were recognized with the Best Intern of the Year award from Hospital Fundación Santafé de Bogota. Following graduation, he completed additional training in emergency and trauma care, including Advanced Trauma Life Support at the University de La Salle and emergency airway management training at the University of Rosario.
In 2009, Dr. Caballero relocated to the United States to continue his postgraduate medical training. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Yale School of Medicine, Saint Raphael Campus, in New Haven, Connecticut, from 2009 to 2012. During his residency, he received several honors that reflected both academic excellence and professionalism, including the Kaplan Medical Honor Society Award for high performance on the United States Medical Licensing Examination, the Professionalism Award in 2010, and the Reach Excellence Award in 2011.
After residency, he pursued specialized cardiovascular training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. There, he completed a Cardiology Fellowship from 2012 to 2015, followed by an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship from 2015 to 2016. During this period, he also completed focused training in transcatheter aortic valve replacement and mechanical circulatory support technologies.
Dr. Caballero began his career as an interventional cardiologist in 2016 at Premier Heart and Vascular Center and the Pepin Heart Institute at Advent Health Tampa. In this role, he performed complex coronary and structural heart procedures, gaining extensive experience in high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions, chronic total occlusion interventions, and transcatheter therapies.
In 2019, he joined HCA Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he continued to expand his work in coronary and structural heart interventions. In 2021, he became a founding physician of Tampa Heart and Vascular Associates, an independent cardiology practice focused on providing rapid access to cardiovascular care and promoting a collaborative, multidisciplinary treatment model.
In addition to his clinical work, Jaime Caballero, MD, is actively involved in academic medicine and professional education. Since 2022, he has served as Collaborative Assistant Professor of Cardiology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Florida. Before this appointment, he participated in teaching and mentoring activities at Advent Health Tampa and HCA Northside Hospital.
He has contributed to the development of educational programs designed to enhance procedural skills in interventional cardiology. Among these initiatives is the Interventional Cardiology Skills Enhancement Course, which he helped develop in 2019 to support the continued training of practicing interventional cardiologists.
Dr. Caballero is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. His work in cardiovascular research and innovation has received national recognition. In 2025, Tampa Heart and Vascular Associates was included among the top ten institutions in the United States for scientific contributions in transcatheter cardiovascular therapeutics according to the Cardiovascular Research Foundation SET-10 rankings.
His leadership in the field extends to participation in guideline development and international conferences. In 2026, he is scheduled to serve on a Guidelines Writing Committee focused on cardio-oncology management in the catheterization laboratory and to organize the Seventh European Endovascular and Interventional Cardiology Conference in Santorini, Greece.
Dr. Caballero has also participated in volunteer and humanitarian initiatives during his career. He contributed to Red Cross programs in Colombia, teaching first aid and disaster response training. He has also participated in international educational activities, including health workshops in South Africa and academic seminars in China focused on global medical collaboration.
Fluent in English and Spanish with basic proficiency in French, Dr. Jaime Caballero works comfortably in diverse international settings. Outside of medicine, he enjoys outdoor activities such as mountain biking, cycling, kayaking, and snowboarding, as well as international travel that allows him to maintain connections with colleagues and stay up to date on developments in cardiovascular medicine worldwide.
