After earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. James Murtagh completed his residency in internal medicine at Parkland Hospital, in Dallas. He then returned to the University of Michigan to undertake a clinical fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
Following his return to Michigan, Dr. Jim Murtagh became a Staff Scientist for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' research agency the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Jim Murtagh conducted his research in Bethesda, Maryland, at the Laboratory of Cellular Physiology and Metabolism in the agency's National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.

Dr. Jim Murtagh developed his interest in sleep science while working at the Atlanta VA Medical Center and at Grady Memorial Hospital, also in Atlanta.
