Dr. Morris Brown’s Biography

Dr. Morris Brown, a retired physician and passionate community leader, was born in 1948 in Anniston, Alabama. As one of eight children in a family where his mother progressed from sharecropping to nursing and his father balanced his job as a laborer with duties as a Baptist preacher, Dr. Brown’s early life was shaped by a strong ethic of service and resilience. Facing the oppressive conditions of the Jim Crow South and events like the murder of Emmitt Till and the burning of the Freedom Riders bus in his hometown, he developed a resolve to fight for justice and equality.

From a young age, Dr. Brown was introduced to medicine through his mother’s employment at a local doctor’s office, where he occasionally assisted. This exposure ignited his ambition to pursue a healthcare career. He took his first step towards this goal by working as a bagger and cashier in local businesses. He became one of the first African Americans to integrate into such roles in his area.

Dr. Brown’s academic journey was marked by excellence. He graduated third in his class from Cobb Avenue High School in Anniston and demonstrated his leadership potential as class president. He pursued higher education at Knoxville College, a historically black liberal arts college in Tennessee, where he was active in the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and student government, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Continuing his education, Dr. Brown chose Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee, for his medical training. Meharry, affiliated with the United Methodist Church and one of the four HBCU medical schools in the U.S., provided him with a strong foundation in medical knowledge and patient care. After graduating in 1974, he entered the United States Air Force Medical Corps, where he served as the Director of Aerospace Medicine, gaining extensive experience in diverse medical environments.

Post-military, Dr. Morris Brown, Dayton, made significant contributions to rebuilding efforts at Central State University following its destruction by a tornado, utilizing his skills to secure funding for rebuilding the community health center. His dedication not only rebuilt the structure but also revitalized the spirit of the community.

Returning to Ohio, Dr. Brown embarked on a distinguished medical career in Dayton, focusing on family medicine and dedicating himself to serving marginalized communities. Over 35 years, his practice grew to serve over 10,000 patients, driven by his commitment to addressing healthcare disparities.

Upon retiring in 2018, Dr. Brown did not retreat from his community responsibilities. He now leads the nonprofit organization “Above the Law,” focusing on criminal justice reform and alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent youth. Dr. Morris Brown, Ohio, also contributes his expertise as a Certified Medical Legal Consultant and holds the position of Chief Financial Officer at Central Solutions LLC, which provides innovative solutions to the commercial maintenance sector.

Dr. Brown’s numerous accolades include a Board Certification in Family Medicine for 35 years and multiple community and healthcare honors, reflecting his enduring impact on his profession and community. His life beyond medicine includes interests in chess, jazz, theater, and art, enriching his personal and professional life through diverse cultural engagements.
