Arootsakoostik: at the edge of the Maine wilderness, a music scene thrives

The Guardian — Portland, the cultural capital of Maine, has venues such as the State Theatre, Port City Music Hall and Space Gallery that bring nationally recognized performers to the state and also give area musicians ample stage time. Portland is about 200 or 300 miles south of the County, though, depending on where you are. In the County, local bands can find gigs at bars, street fairs, weddings … and that’s about it.

How Accurate Are High School Musical's Basketball Scenes? An In-Depth Look

How Accurate Are High School Musical's Basketball Scenes? An In-Depth Look

Nerdist — Ten years ago today, Troy Bolton sang and danced his way into our hearts with the premiere of High School Musical, the Disney Channel made-for-TV movie that made every pre-teen question the lack of spontaneous musical numbers in the hallways between Spanish and Home Ec. Let's not forget, however, that Troy also basketball-ed his way into our hearts, because at its core, HSM is a sports movie... sort of. It follows the classic formula: An athlete has a goal, an obstacle, a downfall, a redemption, and a climax.

Rap God: Hannibal Buress Reviews His Hip-Hop Career

Pigeons & Planes — posted by Derrick Rossignol on February 1, 2016 in Features If you know anything about Hannibal Buress beyond his comedy, know that he's a real hip-hop head. Every now and again, Hannibal has found time to go from fan to creator by getting in on the rap game himself. You may have heard him on Lil Dicky's debut album Professional Rapper this past year, but his discography goes much deeper than that. The comedian's bars are a point of pride, and Hannibal took time to walk us through his rap career thus far.

Andrew W.K. is on Assignment from the Party Gods

Nerdist — Nerdist was in Toronto this past weekend for Riot Fest, and we strongly advise that you check out our festival playlist here and our photo gallery here. While there, I had the pleasure of sitting down with our friend Andrew W.K. for a wide-ranging conversation about man buns, corruption in sports, the upcoming presidential election, and "assignments from the party gods." Praise be to the party god. Nerdist: We're here in Toronto, Canada... Andrew W.K.: That is true. N: One thing I've noticed is that there are so many man buns here. What are your thoughts on man buns?

Has Kanye West killed off the album as we know it?

Has Kanye West killed off the album as we know it?

The Guardian — On 8 January, Kanye West announced via Twitter that his seventh studio album, then named Swish but now titled The Life Of Pablo, would be released on 11 February. That day, which was later punctuated by an album premiere event at Madison Square Garden, came and went, but the album was not available to stream or purchase anywhere, save for low-quality audio rips from the event that made their way online. The album was eventually released a few days later on 14 February, so by traditional standards, that should have meant but the album was done, finished, whole.

Nerdist — On Thursday night, Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis put his arm around my shoulder and grabbed my nipple, kindly humoring the fan in me and posing for a photo. Then we stayed at the side of the stage and carried on watching Cage the Elephant power through an absolutely raucous set at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, ME. It was a moment, and no other better encapsulates the excitable and playful vibe of the Spring Fling Rock AF 2016 tour, which just concluded and featured Foals, Cage The Elephant, Silversun Pickups, and Bear Hands trekking across the country together for the past three weeks.

Why Don't Video Game Movies Work?

Why Don't Video Game Movies Work?

Consequence of Sound — As Warcraft is released in theaters this week, a consideration of why so many of its predecessors fell short of leaving audiences satisfied. In his review of the 2005 movie Doom (based on the video game of same name), Roger Ebert wrote, "No, I haven't played [the game], and I never will, but I know how it feels not to play it, because I've seen the movie. Doom is like some kid came over and is using your computer and won't let you play." His less-than-enthusiastic response to the video-game-to-film adaptation is by no means uncharacteristic of the reception these movies tend to receive.
