It's a pretty common theme in anime for a villain to, at least temporarily, become an ally. Shōnen is saturated in this trope for a good reason; when it's pulled off well, it works. There aren't many moments as satisfying as watching a former villain put their own interests aside to fight with the series' protagonist against a threat neither could defeat on their own.
