INTRODUCTION Extensive studies on the molecular basis of the interaction between plants and phytopathogens have established that the plant immune system is largely composed of two layers of recognition (Jones & Dangl, 2006). The first layer, called pattern-triggered immunity (PTI), is initiated upon recognizing conserved pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) (DeFalco & Zipfel, 2021). Some plant pathogens overcome PTI by delivering virulence proteins called effectors into host plant cells.
