INTRODUCTION Mahoenui giant wētā (Deinacrida mahoenui; MGW; Gibbs, 1999) are large (individuals can grow to 65 mm in length and weigh up to 25 g), flightless orthopterans, endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand. They are arboreal, thought to have once lived in the epiphytes of tall tawa (Beilschmiedia tawa) forests in the Waikato, North Island, Aotearoa New Zealand (Sherley & Hayes, 1993).

1 INTRODUCTION Hybridization can result in new species that reproduce asexually via parthenogenesis (Mallet, 2007; Neiman et al., 2014). During hybrid speciation, or allopolyploidization, the set of alleles from one species, known as homoeologues (Glover et al., 2016), are combined with the alleles of another species. This can result in a highly heterozygous hybrid genome, even more so if polyploid (Birky, 1996).
