Recently I was waiting for a friend to pick up some chips at a well-liked fast-food restaurant frequented by my campus mates. Being a Friday, there were lots of people. Their revealing attire was totally acceptable given the oppressive heat (climate change is not a cliché anymore) that seemed to have travelled from the Sahara Desert. My eyes, which were wandering as I waited for my friend, caught sight of a couple talking animatedly.

Valentine's Day is upon us. It's that time of year when guys cannot be excused for not going all out for their significant other. It appears that many people have worked out how to approach the day. You will hear more and more people criticise the day as intended for the gullible and the weak-willed. The fact that many who criticise Valentine's are either single or cash-strapped is a telling coincidence. Men who are struggling financially will wax poetic about how expensive it is to satisfy a woman.

We can't hold it against Stratis Karamanlakis if he decides to leave the comfort of London, travel to Kenya, and launch a startup that pairs employers and job seekers—a venture for which he is using his own funds. Hopefully, he pays taxes. With this victim mindset, Africa will fail. But the Whiteness is not the issue. Capital is the issue, and utter mistrust of youth and their perspectives. Our obnoxious belief that brick and mortar is real makes everything worse.
