Pretraining data, not verifiability, is why LLMs are especially good at math (and coding)
Follow-up to: “LLMs are (still) mostly powered by imitative learning, not RL” A common take I’ve been hearing is: “LLMs are especially good at math because math is easy to verify”. But that story doesn’t make much sense. For one thing, “easy to verify” is most directly relevant for the RL part of LLM training pipelines, and the leading LLM companies have said that they spend very little effort on RL-for-math. Worse, to the extent that verifiability matters at all in math, the verifier is an LLM.
Is Mythos good at cyber because it kept hacking Anthropic's sandboxes during training?
From the Mythos preview system card (emphasis mine): We ran an automated review of model behavior during training, sampling several hundred thousand transcripts from across much of the training process. We used recursive-summarization-based tools backed by Claude Opus 4.6 to summarize the resulting transcripts.
We need 3rd party Training-Run Assessments
Training-run assessments conducted by a 3rd party should become a standard part of frontier AI safety. By a Training-Run Assessment, or TRA, I mean an in-depth analysis of the post-training pipeline and dynamics leading up to a frontier model release. A TRA can look at intermediate checkpoints, training rollouts, RL environments, reward signals, SFT datasets, and the process by which the developer responded to warning signs.

HALIFAX – In today’s world, getting youth interested in their community and the families and histories that made it what it is can be quite the challenge. And of course it is...the rest of the world seems to be working to make sure everyone is kept staring at their phones and TVs rather than interacting with one another and the communities that surround them.
What Consumers Actually Want From AI Customer Service
You've made decisions about your AI customer service strategy. You've probably made assumptions about what your customers are willing to accept, what frustrates them and when they want a human instead. Ada ran the research to find out. And the findings are about to test those assumptions. Early data shows customers care far more about speed and resolution than empathy or human-likeness. Most teams are optimizing for the wrong thing. And that's just one finding.

Changing Seasons
At this point last year, I was desperate for change. After nine years at my previous job, I’d given my notice and fully committed to Freetrail, pursuing an intuition that the project was my true calling in life. Simultaneously, I’d set the wheels in motion to depart my previous longtime sponsor to follow a new path as an athlete and partner in startup footwear brand, Speedland.

By Cody Jett “Run when it’s fun, walk when it’s not” As kids we often have those dreams of hitting the game winning home run, throwing the game winning touchdown, or shooting the game winning shot. As adults, it’s now crossing the finish line of some of the most touted races. But not all of us discover this dream later in life and then have the desire and determination to go out and completely dominate one of the most sought out 100 milers in the United States, TWICE (Western States 100)….
The Freetrail Podcast with Dylan Bowman: Zach Miller
Zach Miller is one of the all-time legends of trail running. The elusive DNF, did not finish, something we all do our best to avoid - sometimes even at all costs. However, due to the nature of our sport, at some point each of us will most likely find ourselves facing this decision. We will question our ability to go on and finish what we started. We will question our toughness, our perseverance, our ability to suffer. We will question our identity, our training, our bodies. Deciding to DNF a race teaches us a lot about ourselves.

Sweaty Season: The Basics of Hydration By: Keely Henninger Welcome to sweaty season! As the temperatures begin to rise and runs get longer, we are sure to be ending our runs in extra sweaty shorts and sports bras with salt crusts on our necks. While this transition from winter months to summer months may feel hard, our bodies are well equipped to deal with the heat.
Freetrail - Freetrail
We're kicking off a fueling series with Keely Henninger with a piece she wrote on the importance of proper fueling. Keely recently won the Gorge Waterfalls 50K, and partially attributes this win to her well dialed fueling strategy. Read on for her thoughts on fueling during training racing. “How was your fueling?” Say that to an ultra/trail runner after a long run and you’re sure to get an awkward, grumbled response resembling something like “Oh, it was fine.” No more details or comments added.

BY MATTHEW HOADLEY "We get to do this!" is what my wife said during our first 100-mile race in 2019 when I was struggling. Her words are something I try to keep in the forefront of my mind when I am training or running an ultramarathon. On March 24, 2013, I took my last drink of alcohol. The next day, March 25, 2013 is my sobriety date — the day the rest of my life began. I never felt comfortable in my own skin and used alcohol as a tool to calm my depression and anxiety.

At mile 30 of the 2022 Black Canyon 100k, after being highlighted and favored to be in the top 10, I stopped my watch, hugged my crew, and took off my bib for the first-time mid-race in my running career. In the sport of Ultrarunning, The DNF or ‘Did Not Finish’ is a much discussed and debated topic. This is my personal reflection on how my perception and interpretation of the crucible of the ‘DNF’ changed before and after it happened to me.
The Freetrail Podcast with Dylan Bowman: Adam Campbell
Adam Campbell is a Canadian mountain athlete living in Squamish, BC. He was one of my first inspirations in my early years as an aspiring pro trail runner. He's had an amazing career as an athlete but in the last several years, Adam has endured a few very heavy life experiences. In 2016, Adam had a near death fall in the mountains and in 2020, Adam lost his wife in a backcountry skiing accident.

Hello Friends, Today I write to inform you of big news for our little operation. We are officially rebranding our company – Pyllars is now Freetrail. There are many reasons for this change, but fundamentally the purpose is to bring our brand identity more in line with our mission and our market. As we’ve grown as a company, I’ve learned a lot about how I want our brand to show up in our community and in the world in general.

Dear Pyllars Fam, Hope everyone is feeling great ahead of Thanksgiving – my favorite holiday of the year. I’m writing this from a plane on my way home to Boulder, CO to see my mom and connect with old friends. Deep inner gratitude! I wanted to start the newsletter this week with a few content recommendations that have moved me in different ways over the past week. Harmony and I have not historically been binge watchers.

Hey Pyllars Family, Hope everyone is doing well as we approach the holiday season and the end of 2021. What a year it’s been for me personally, for our business, and for the sport in general. I’m currently putting some thought into my main takeaways from this year and contemplating predictions for the future. I’ll compile them in my brain and share them in podcast or newsletter form sometime in December.

Hey Pyllars Family, Hope everyone is having a good week! Since last we spoke, I’ve been on a bit of a world tour, racing the Grand Raid of Reunion Island, and enjoying some lazy days in Paris with Harmony. For those who didn’t see, my race was a bit of a disaster, though a valuable learning experience. The Grand Raid is a singular event that is complicated beyond description.
The Pyllars Podcast with Dylan Bowman: Stephanie Case
1 hr 25 min Stephanie Case is an ultrarunner and human rights lawyer for the UN. This is her second appearance on the podcast. Hey Pyllars Family, Happy fall! The seasons are changing and it feels so nice. We’ve mercifully received some pretty significant and much needed precipitation in the PNW and the forests are very happy. Over the weekend, Harmony, Ryan and I went to Leavenworth, WA for some mountain recreation and were completely blown away by the beauty of the area. I’m already plotting an extended training camp there in the near future! Oregon and Washington are just so dense with amazing places to explore.

Hey Pyllars Family, Hope all is well in your life and in your training. I’ve slowly been emerging from the UTMB fog and officially back in the training groove after taking a massive break after Hardrock. I’m signed up for the Grand Raid of Reunion Island – the Diagonale des Fous – and I couldn’t be more excited to tackle this legendary and brutal course.

Hey Pyllars Family, We're back home after an incredible week filling our souls with friendship and our bellies with pizza. It was so great to be back in one of the most beautiful places for what is always the best week of the year in trail running. Here's what we have going on at Pyllars HQ this week: Eliud Kipchoge | The Last Milestone I had the incredible honor of interviewing Eliud Kipchoge for the podcast while we were in Chamonix.
