Mavericks face a real test in morphing their return in the Porzingis trade into assets
It has been about 48 hours since the Mavericks traded Kristaps Porzingis and a second round pick to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans. It is still hard to believe that it has actually happened, but it has and now it’s time to focus on what exactly is next for Dallas and its two new players. The simple fact is that both players were having terrible seasons and are early on in big contracts the Wizards seemed to have immediate buyers remorse after finalizing.
Mavericks send Porzingis to the Wizards in shocking deadline deal
The Mavericks put an exclamation point on the NBA’s trade deadline on Thursday with a deal that shocked everyone in the NBA universe. Dallas has spent this entire deadline day trying to find a home for Porzingis' considerable contract, league sources say, and they have struck a deal with the Wizards to send the oft-injured big man to Washington for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans.

As we head into the back half of January, the February 10th NBA trade deadline is fast approaching. After dealing with injuries and a breakout of COVID-19 over the last month, the Mavericks are finally healthy and playing their best basketball of the season. Entering Monday night’s game with the Oklahoma City Thunder with a 24-19 record and sitting at fifth in the Western Conference, Dallas has a real opportunity to keep things rolling over the next few weeks.
Mavericks Midseason Awards: Who is helping Luka the most as the team looks to recover from slow start?
After Wednesday night’s game in New York against the Knicks, the Mavericks will officially be at the halfway point in their season. Their current hot streak has pushed them back over the .500 mark, but being on pace for around 44-46 wins is not what this team expected entering the season.
Dirk Nowitzki has earned his way into forever being in the mind of DFW sports fans
The day we all knew would eventually come is finally here. Dirk Nowitzki’s number 41 is going up into the rafters of the American Airlines Center. It honestly could have happened back on April 9th, 2019 when he announced that night’s game against the Suns was going to be his final home game. Or it could have happened the first week of the next season.
A big game against Spurs shows exactly how Kristaps Porzingis can be most effective for the Mavericks
The Mavericks bounced back from their bad loss in Chicago on Wednesday with a comfortable 123-109 road win over the Spurs on Friday night. They were led by their top billing duo of Luka Doncic with a 32 point, 15 assist and 12 rebound triple-double and a 32 point, 7 rebound, 3 block performance from Kristaps Porzingis. After not scoring over 18 points in the first three games of the season prior to his lower back injury, Porzingis has scored 20+ in three of his four games since returning.
Kristaps Porzingis looks strong in return to the Mavericks lineup on Saturday night
It’s never easy to get a strong hold of what exactly the Mavericks have with Kristaps Porzingis due to him so frequently missing games due to injury. After leaving the team’s third game of the season early with back tightness back on October 26th, Porzingis had been out of the Dallas lineup for the last five games with very little info or updates provided on his status from day to day. The big man returned on Saturday night just in time to see some theatrics from his teammate Luka Doncic.

You almost start to take moments like this for granted. Almost. Buzzer-beating shots to win a game are something that simply never grow old and seeing another one from Luka Doncic on Saturday night to help the Mavericks sneak past the Celtics 111-108 at the American Airlines Center was just about perfection.
Mavericks put their trust in Jalen Brunson and he delivered in win over the Spurs
Nothing has been particularly fun or easy about the first eight games of the season for the Mavericks. Wednesday night in San Antonio was no different as Dallas squeezed out a 109-108 win over the young Spurs to improve to 5-3 on the season. On the second night of a back-to-back, Luka Doncic had seemingly very little left in his legs for the second half and the Mavericks needed someone to turn to for the big buckets down the stretch. Luka’s fellow 2018 draftee was there to pick up the slack.
Three things as the Mavericks host the Kings on Halloween
Following the Mavericks’ disastrous trip to Denver on Friday night, they return home to host the Sacramento Kings on Sunday afternoon at the American Airlines Center.

The Mavericks’ 3-2 record start to the season is acceptable on the surface, but any sort of dive below has any observer feeling queasy. The latest chapter of the team’s troubling start to the season was their 106-75 blowout loss to the Denver Nuggets in the Mile High City on Friday night.
Kristaps Porzingis struggling to find high percentage shots through three games for the Mavericks
One of the Mavericks’ biggest selling points for why they could take a major step forward this season was the improved performance of big man Kristaps Porzingis under new head coach Jason Kidd. He was entering an offseason healthy and eventually made it through training camp healthy. He was set to make big things happen following his disappointing and heavily-scrutinized playoff performance against the Los Angeles Clippers last summer.
Three interesting things to monitor with the Mavs this preseason
The Mavericks kick off their four game preseason slate tonight at the American Airlines Center when they host the Utah Jazz. It’s already been stated that Dorian Finney-Smith, Frank Ntilikina and Dwight Powell will miss Wednesday’s game for non-injury reasons. The projected starters are not surprising: Luka Doncic, Tim Hardaway Jr., Reggie Bullock, Maxi Kleber and Kristaps Porzingis.
Jason Kidd already proving to be quite a change of pace as coach of the Mavericks
When the Mavericks and Rick Carlisle unexpectedly parted ways in June, it was a given that whoever was the next coach on the sidelines for the team was going to have a different approach. Through each of his chances to speak to the media over the last three months, new head coach Jason Kidd has proven to be quite a change of pace in virtually every way in comparison to Carlisle.
Recap: Cowboys dominate Eagles with big statement win in home opener on Monday Night Football
With first place in the NFC East on the line on Monday night, the Cowboys seized the opportunity in front of them with authority and hammered the rival Philadelphia Eagles 41-21 at AT&T Stadium. Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes, Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard combined for 155 yards on the ground and the Dallas defense added two more interceptions to their now league-leading 8 total takeaway through three weeks. That’s how you make a statement against your division rival.

This week ESPN has captured the attention of basketball fans with their annual “NBArank” series where they count down the league’s top 100 players. On Friday, the site released their top five players and it went as the following: 5. Stephen Curry 4. Luka Doncic 3. LeBron James 2. Giannis Antetokounmpo 1. Kevin Durant Doncic finishes inside the top five of the rankings and at number four overall for the second consecutive year. Not bad for a player just entering their fourth season.
Preview: Cowboys get first shot at overcoming new injuries in road matchup with the Chargers
After falling to the defending champion Buccaneers in their season opener last week, the Cowboys will get another shot at their first win on the season when they take on Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium at 3:25 on Sunday afternoon. Following an eventful week off the field, the Cowboys will be without several key starters for the foreseeable future with the likes of La’el Collins, Michael Gallup, Randy Gregory and Demarcus Lawrence all out with a suspension or injury.
Players acquired over last several trade deadlines are starting to make an impact on the Rangers major league roster
The Rangers are on their way to their fifth consecutive losing season. With losing seasons, you often have a number of veterans dealt at the trade deadline and if they’re not absolute superstars being moved, teams likely have to make their pick of a few iffy prospects to try to develop into eventual contributors.
A major fork in the road is in front of Mark Cuban as owner of the Mavericks
The Mavericks are as messy as they’ve been since the 90’s when they spent virtually the entirety of the decade as the worst team in basketball. On Monday, an article was released that states there is growing tension in their front office between GM Donnie Nelson, Mark Cuban, head coach Rick Carlisle and analytics guru Haralabos Voulgaris.
Rick Carlisle out as Mavericks coach after 13 seasons
In another shocking development in an insane week for the Mavericks, Rick Carlisle announced Thursday afternoon that he would not return to the Mavericks next season. The 61-year-old leaves Dallas after 13 seasons and the lone coach to lead the Mavs to a championship in their 41 year history. The announcement comes just one day after the team confirmed that long-time GM Donnie Nelson and the organization mutually agreed to part ways.
Keeping It Semi-Casual: Looking back on 2020 for the Stars and how 2021 is already off to a rocky start
On this episode of Keeping It Semi-Casual, I’m joined by Garrett Jones who covers the Stars and Rangers for Dallas Sports Fanatic. Garrett and I talk about his crazy 2020 that saw him graduate college, get married and then move to a new city with a full-time job before discussing things like Dallas vs. Houston, the Columbia, Missouri experience before getting into what we expect from the Dallas Stars this season (40:55).
Re-signing of Trey Burke brings back Mavericks bubble spark plug
The first news coming from the Mavericks early in free agency on Friday is that they have re-signed bubble star Trey Burke to a three-year deal worth $10 million. After signing with Dallas in July, the now 28-year-old guard came up big in Orlando for the Mavericks by averaging 12.3 points on 47% shooting from deep over the course of their six game first round playoff series loss to the Clippers.

The latest Mavs offseason rumor is one that doesn’t even mention them as a possible destination for the player in question. Jared Weiss of The Athletic, who covers the Celtics for the site, mentioned in his 2019-2020 Celtics obituary piece on Monday that Indiana Pacer stars Victor Oladipo and DFW native Myles Turner could possibly be interested in finding their way out of Indiana before the start of the 2020-2021 season.

By taking down the Clippers in game two of their first round series last night, the Mavericks picked up their first playoff win since April 18th, 2016. While Luka Doncic led the team with 28 points, he was limited to just 28 minutes of action due to foul trouble throughout the second half. Somehow, the rest of the Mavericks were able to come together and make up for the absence of their superstar. While it may have been a surprise to us as fans, the team knows what they’re capable of.
Keeping It Semi-Casual: Talking Rondo, Romo and AAC atmosphere with Michael Lark
DSF owner Michael Lark and Editor-in-Chief Dylan Duell get together on this episode of Keeping It Semi-Casual. Michael talks about his journey as a credentialed media member from an unsure first-timer to covering every kind of event imaginable in the DFW area.
Trying to make sense of the Mavs finishing their scrimmage slate with an OT win over the 76ers
The Mavericks have escaped their three scrimmages in the Orlando bubble seemingly unscathed on the injury front. The final game of their three game slate of scrimmages (unfortunately) required overtime to decide on Tuesday night but Dallas was able to escape with a 118-115 win over the Joel Embiid-less Philadelphia 76ers.
Best of the Mavericks social media fun after several days in the bubble
The 22 teams that will participate in the NBA’s resumption of the 2019-2020 season all officially arrived in the “bubble” at the Walt Disney World resort this week. The Mavericks arrived on Wednesday and cleared their 48 hour quarantines in their hotel rooms on Friday afternoon. The team quickly got to work with a team meeting and practice on Friday afternoon.
One year later, Mavs free agency signings of 2019 are proving their worth
Usually around this time of the year, Mavs fans are soaking in countless Woj Bombs and seeing that most of them have hopeful free agent targets signing elsewhere. This July, basketball fans aren’t gobbling up free agency news, they’re gearing up for the league’s planned return to action following a four-month hiatus after COVID-19 halted the season in March. Last summer, the Mavericks began their offseason gearing up for a pursuit of Kemba Walker along with re-signing Kristaps Porzingis.
Mavs and FC Dallas will both represent DFW at Disney World after MLS announces tournament in Orlando
As the NBA continues to negotiate with its players to figure out all of the details to allow its season to resume at the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando next month, news was officially announced this week that Major League Soccer will resume its 2020 season at the Wide World of Sports Complex at the same time next month and into August. Counting down the days 'til 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟴… All the details on our #MLSisBack Tournament at @WaltDisneyWorld.
Rangers What If: The Nelson Cruz 50 game suspension in August 2013
It’s incredibly unfortunate that Nelson Cruz will always be tied to what will probably remain the most devastating moment in Texas Rangers history. When he missed that somewhat tricky fly ball to the warning track at Busch Stadium back in October 2011, he missed a chance to seal the Rangers’ first ever world championship. In the moment, fans were furious with him. Most were able to forgive him over time because he was an incredibly talented hitter.

Thursday brought the official news that we’ve all been waiting to hear for close to three months: the NBA is officially committed to a plan to finish its 2019-2020 season. Notice the wording there. It’s very premature to say the NBA is officially back since it is close to two months until the first official games get started on July 31st. Even the Mavericks’ official statement on the subject is careful to make anything seem certain.
NBA ready to ratify plan for a return in Orlando; How does it shake out for the Mavs?
The NBA is expected to formally announce Thursday morning that the league will resume the 2019-2020 season in late July at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. The announcement will come after the Board of Governors ratifies the plan during a call around 11:30 AM Dallas time Thursday morning. Only 22 of the league’s 30 teams will be playing, and Luka Doncic and the 40-27 Mavericks will be one of them.

ESPN’s “The Last Dance” docu-series has been a weekly treat for all sports fans to enjoy the last three Sunday nights. Ratings have been impressive and it shows that people are as hungry as ever for new sports content. It obviously helps that the subject matter of the documentary is basically the most popular and successful athlete of all-time in Michael Jordan, but I would think that each region has a team or subject matter they would flock to consume a 10-hour documentary on if were available.
2011 Mavs Playoffs Rewind: Dirk & Co. close out the Blazers with stressful finish at the Rose Garden
I miss Mavericks basketball! It’s been almost seven weeks since we last saw Luka Doncic connect with Kristaps Porzingis on an alley-oop or seen the infectious smile of Boban Marjanovic. In the meantime, we’re looking back on the Mavs 2011 run to their first and only NBA title to pass the time until they return to the court.

Poking your way around Baseball Reference is certainly a fun way to waste half an hour every once in a while. For baseball fans, sometimes we get caught up poking around the site whether we should be delegating our time in that way or not. Well, we all have slightly more time on our hands these days, so why not cruise around Baseball Reference until I’ve noted each and every player that has manned first base for the Rangers ever since 2010?
2011 Mavs Playoffs Rewind: Dirk, Kidd push Mavs past Blazers in the fourth quarter for G1 win
With the sports calendar at a halt right now thanks to the global pandemic, we’re all watching a lot of old classic games. If you’re a Mavericks fan, then you’ve certainly caught a few of the replays from the 2011 title run on NBA TV or at least been inspired to go watch some highlights on YouTube just to recapture that magical feeling we all felt that spring.
What are we missing after one month without sports?
The last time I was able to attend a live sporting event was back on March 11th when I was at what will likely be the last Mavs game of the 2019-2020 season. Boban Marjanovic was going off for a career night to help Dallas take down the Denver Nuggets, but the game seemed almost like background music I barely paid attention to while I feverishly followed every single development around the country on Twitter.
Biggest beneficiaries from the Mavs if the remainder of the 2019-2020 NBA season is lost
As we get close to the one month marker since the sudden halt of the 2019-2020 season, it’s beginning to seem like a lifetime ago when the Mavs beat the Nuggets on March 11th behind a career night from Boban Marjanovic. While that game in particular was a hoot with everyone’s favorite lovable big man going off, there was a ton of noise going on outside the game with the league shutting down that night for the foreseeable future thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mark Cuban & Mavericks continue good deeds with donation to help staff at local medical facilities
The last few weeks have been about as trying of times around the country as any in recent memory as the COVID-19 virus continues to wreak havoc across the nation in both physical and economic ways. Thousands have become ill with the virus, many more have lost jobs in the wake of trying to prevent even more from getting sick, and medical facilities worldwide haven’t been stretched this thin in decades.

After sixteen seasons of Hall of Fame-worthy play for one of the most iconic franchises in all of sports, the soon-to-be 38-year-old Jason Witten is going to put on the pads for a team that isn’t the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. It’s not surprising that Witten will be headed elsewhere, as his insistence on playing another season just didn’t really seem to line up with Mike McCarthy’s new coaching regime trying to make their mark this season.
Five suggested sports films/TV shows available on streaming platforms
With all of the insanity going on around the world right now due to the coronavirus, one thing that should become a reality is that we need to stay home a bit more to minimize the spread of this virus. Staying at home is secretly what we all would like to do all the time, so it shouldn’t be too hard for most of us to find some light in an otherwise dark and concerning situation.
Big third quarter helps the Mavs cruise past Morant and the Grizzlies
After a tough overtime win over the Pelicans on Wednesday night, the Mavericks needed something a little easier to digest on Friday night. The currently eighth seeded Memphis Grizzlies came to town looking to steal another game from Dallas at the AAC after handing it to the Mavs back on February 5th. The Mavericks led 61-49 at halftime, but this team has proven on multiple occasions that no lead is truly safe.
Mike Minor enters 2020 with same questions despite coming off an All-Star campaign
The Rangers enter 2020 with their starting rotation heralded as the unquestioned strength of the roster. The additions of Corey Kluber, Kyle Gibson and Jordan Lyles this winter, the top of the Rangers rotation suddenly doesn’t need to be absolutely perfect every time out to keep the team’s head above the water. Even with that pressure, Mike Minor and Lance Lynn were two of the best pitchers in baseball for Texas in 2019.
Hello and Goodbye: Mavericks waive Broekhoff in order to sign Kidd-Gilchrist
Plenty of fans were upset that the Mavericks didn’t make a move for a wing at the trade deadline last Thursday. Just five days later, they’ve done something to address this need on their roster. The team officially announced Tuesday morning that they were waiving fan-favorite Ryan Broekhoff in order to sign the recently bought-out Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. The Mavericks officially announce the signing of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. MKG will wear #9 for Dallas.
How did the Renegades do in week one of hosting an XFL game at Globe Life Park?
After the inaugural week of the new-and-improved XFL officially launched on Saturday with games in Washington D.C. and Houston, it was time for North Texas to get its shot to show if they were ready for some more football just one week after the conclusion of the NFL season. If you’re just someone on the internet each week, you can kind of get a feel for the several sectors when it comes to how people are feeling about the XFL before even watching a second of it: 1.
Three takeaways from a quiet Mavs trade deadline
When the 2 PM Central time buzzer sounded on Thursday afternoon and there weren’t any last minute deals making their ways through the cracks, lots of Mavericks fans probably had one question on their mind: “That’s it?” While Thursday’s league-wide trade deadline ended up being a lot more eventful than suspected with the likes of D’Angelo Russell and Andre Drummond on the move, Donnie Nelson and the rest of the Mavericks brass opted to stand pat at the deadline.
Willie Cauley-Stein excited for new opportunity to work with Rick Carlisle and Luka Doncic in Dallas
After Willie Cauley-Stein spent his final collegiate season at the University of Kentucky going 38-1 with the likes of Karl Anthony-Towns and Devin Booker on his team, expectations were high for his NBA career. He rightfully went number six overall in the 2015 draft.
With Garrett gone, where do his accomplishments rank among recent DFW coaches?
While I was scrolling through Twitter sometime Monday morning after it was revealed that Mike McCarthy would be the new coach of the Cowboys, I came across this eye-opening tweet from Dallas Morning News columnist Brad Townsend: Coaches of DFW teams since Rick Carlisle became @dallasmavs' coach in 2008: Cowboys: Wade Phillips, Jason Garrett, Mike McCarthy Rangers: Ron Washington, Jeff Banister, Chris Woodward Stars: Dave Tippett, Marc Crawford, Lindy Ruff, Ken Hitchcock, Jim Montgomery, Rick...
Rangers reunion with Robinson Chirinos is about more than just good feelings
After weeks of speculation of it being a possibility, the Rangers have finally brought back an old friend. According to numerous reports on Tuesday night, Robinson Chirinos is headed back to Arlington. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the deal is for one year and with a team option for the 2021 season. Mark Feinsand is reporting the salaries would be $5.75M in 2020 and $6.5M in 2021 with a $1M buyout if Texas declines the team option.
First day of Winter Meetings has plenty of impact on the Rangers
The annual baseball Winter Meetings were underway on Sunday but the first 24 hours were a bit of a slow burn. As everyone descended upon the events in San Diego on Monday, the first major domino fell in the free agency frenzy. Stephen Strasburg’s seven-year, $245M deal with the #Nationals will give him highest average annual value for a pitcher in major-league history – at least temporarily. Gerrit Cole likely to get even more than $35M per, and for more than seven years.
