Introduction Global climate change is driving complex and regionally variable alterations to temperature and weather patterns, which in turn can impact population persistence and the geographic distribution of organisms. These consequences result from the impacts of climate change on phenology, growing season length, or the frequency and severity of thermal extremes (Yang et al., 2021).

1 INTRODUCTION The notion that the interaction between climate and physiology is a driver of population dynamics, species distributions and abundance has a long history in ecology (e.g. Grinnell, 1914; Merriam, 1894; Shelford, 1911). Examination of this interaction has revealed large-scale spatiotemporal patterns for several physiological traits across taxa (Addo-Bediako et al., 2002; Agosta et al., 2013; Bozinovic et al., 2011; Brattstrom, 1970; Deutsch et al., 2008).
