A Backpack Equals Freedom

The right pack for your back means more carefree journeys. I’m a backpack guy. Don’t even ask me about rolly bags—they’re like dragging a ball and chain; slow, loud and useless in gravel and snow. They don’t fit under your seat. Half the time you end up having to check them anyway. I hope that when I die at the ripe old age of 107, they find me carrying a great carry-on backpack filled with tightly rolled socks and underwear.

Obscura Day Summer 2025: Chiling With the Puffins on Grímsey Island

Obscura Day is an Atlas Obscura tradition where the whole team takes a day off to explore—whether it’s a nearby hidden gem or a distant, wondrous site. Check out the places our team visited. Not to be confused with the other much larger Grimsey island, this tiny island off the coast of the Westfjords is one of the few places where you can go and hang directly with puffins. Inhabited for hundreds of years, the people here have always lived alongside these puffins.

Wonderwerk Cave

Over a million years ago, one of our ancient ancestors took a burning stick from a wildfire and carried it into a dark cave in South Africa. Light danced on the walls as our hominin forebear (Homo Erectus, that is, not quite modern humans just yet) placed the burning stick on a pile of twigs, which burst into flames. Or at least, this is the scene we might imagine based on evidence found in Wonderwerk Cave.
