INTRODUCTION Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a severe multisystem disorder typically characterized by the onset of maternal high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine after 20 weeks of gestation1. It affects approximately 2–4% of pregnancies and leads to over 70 000 maternal deaths and 500 000 fetal deaths globally each year2. While the precise underlying causes of PE remain unclear, multiple maternal and placental factors are thought to be involved.
