Persistent postoperative opioid use (‘persistence’) is defined as the presence of an active prescription for opioids more than 90 days post-surgery [1]. Opioid-experienced patients are at high risk of developing persistence after surgery, with one study reporting 1.72 times greater odds of persistence in participants who used any opioid in the 12 months before surgery when compared with an opioid-naïve group [2].
