Abstract How cellular metabolism facilitates tissue-resident macrophage maintenance remains elusive. Here we show that visceral adipose tissue (VAT)-resident macrophages, unlike monocyte-derived macrophages, are enriched with mitochondrial-specific antioxidant enzymes restraining inflammation and promoting VAT homeostasis and insulin sensitivity.
