By Ed Hooper New York Daily News | Nov 11, 2021 at 11:11 AM This Veterans Day marks the 50th anniversary of a rebellion the 90th Congress never saw coming. It started plainly enough in 1968 when they passed legislation moving a number of U.S. holidays to Monday observances to give federal employees a three-day weekend. Read the transcripts and committee reports of the day and it reads like a Chamber of Commerce spirit meeting.

Memorial Day is the only true American people’s holiday. Though Major Gen. John A. Logan is credited with General Order 11 establishing May 30th as the fixed date of Decoration Day at National Cemeteries, it rested solely on the American people to keep it and they did for a century without official decree or legislation. Memorial Day is not a day for veterans. Ask one and they’ll tell you.
