As a celibate gay Christian, here’s how I find intimacy
Our society defines intimacy in almost exclusively romantic or sexual terms. But Ed Shaw says that this misunderstanding is dangerous and harmful. Connection and oneness can be found in so many other places Google the word ‘intimacy’ and nearly all the images displayed will be romantic or sexual. This perfectly reflects where our society thinks intimacy is to be found – on a date or in a bedroom. But what if you haven’t been on a date recently and sleep alone?
Settlement would be good for all
HOSE of us who are seeking a formal settlement to resolve the Church of England’s endless conversations on same-sex sexual relationships have not yet persuaded enough people. We have been heard to make demands that would benefit only us and lead the Church into schism rather than seek a way forward that could benefit us all and keep the Church of England together. But the most recent meeting of the General Synod (Synod, 1 March) helped me to see that we all need a uniting settlement.
Why I won’t quit the CofE despite the chaos over same-sex relationships
Services of blessings for gay couples were narrowly approved for a trial period at the Church of England’s General Synod yesterday, amid heated debate.
Each misstep has provided ‘valuable learning opportunities’: 10 years of Clearwell Capital
Our 10-year celebration coincided with our 100th loan which we completed last month, and is now our biggest loan to date — a £3.8m stretch senior loan to convert a two-storey office building into 27 one- and two-bedroom apartments for a repeat client in Birmingham. We made the decision to stretch to the higher loan size because we support those repeat clients who have a track record of development delivery; it strengthens relationships and makes good business sense.
City officials want to see pedestrian bridge over 210
BRAINERD — City officials in Brainerd will explore the idea of a pedestrian bridge over Highway 210/Washington Street that would connect to the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail. “MnDOT doesn’t seem all that interested in spending their money on a bridge, but I think it’s something we should look into,” said City Council member Gabe Johnson, chair of the council’s Personnel and Finance Committee, on Nov. 21.

Reader Opinion: Keeping our kids safe
Letters I was pleased that the school board followed medical advice and common sense in having the children wear masks at school. Written By: Ed Shaw | 5:05 am, Oct. 13, 2021 × As a parent of two children in the district I was pleased that the school board followed medical advice and common sense in having the children wear masks at school. At the school where my kids attend a couple of their classmates have gotten COVID.
What would a conversion therapy ban mean for gay Christians like me?
(Getty images) As a gay Christian, I’m worried about the calls to ban ‘gay conversion therapy’. Of course, it’s right that gay people are protected and some of the practices referred to as conversion therapy are deeply wrong. But there’s a danger that badly-drafted legislation could make life impossible for those working in churches when gay people come to us for help. I’ve worked on the staff of Anglican churches for twenty years.
Reader Opinion: Not funny
If it were not so serious, it would be funny, the signs that a few local businesses have up on their doors. These places apparently do not want to encourage their employees and customers to wear the masks which all health professionals advise us to put on in public to slow the spread of COVID.
Reader Opinion: The adults in the room
Letters Written By: Ed Shaw | Sep 27th 2020 - 5am. × It is good to see Doug Houge running for reelection to the Crow Wing County Board for the Crosby area district, and Arlene Jones running a write in campaign for the southern Crow Wing County district. Both Doug and Arlene are mature, reasonable people who take a problem solving approach and avoid personal attacks. That is not true for both of their opponents, who seem to love insulting anyone they disagree with.
Reader Opinion: Tour of Lakes
I was pleased to see the Dispatch covering the 31st annual Tour of Lakes bike ride. Once again, we are starting and finishing on Laurel Street downtown on the first Saturday in June. I wanted to offer a friendly correction, the story said that the ride was June 20, it is actually June 6, the first Saturday.
Celibate Gay Christians: Neither Shockingly Conservative nor Worryingly Liberal
Being a celibate gay Christian means being an object of suspicion. The wider LGBTQ community sees you as shockingly conservative (“You think gay sex is wrong?”), while the wider evangelical community sees you as worryingly liberal (“You call yourself gay?”). One day, someone will be expressing disgust toward your “fundamentalist” beliefs. On the next, someone else is targeting your “perverted” sexual orientation.
