Northern Ireland’s A&E crisis continues, as 1 in 5 patients wait over 12 hours

12 August 2026 Tens of thousands of patients at Emergency Departments (EDs) in Northern Ireland waited over 12 hours in the last few months alone, according to the latest government figures. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) is calling for the Northern Ireland Executive to commit to ending ED overcrowding, as over 11,000 patients waited more than 12 hours in June – the worst of any June since records began.

RCEM responds to announcement of new mental health Emergency Departments

6 August 2026 Responding to the UK Government’s announcement of 59 new dedicated mental health services in English Emergency Departments, as part of an expansion of provision across the health service, Dr Adrian Boyle, Immediate Past President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, said: “Emergency Departments are not the best place for patients suffering an acute mental health episode and there should be alternatives; they are often noisy, overcrowded and confusing places.

That’s the message from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine today (4 August) following the publication of Public Health Scotland’s latest ED performance statistics.
