Increased lethality of respiratory infection by Streptococcus pneumoniae in the Dp16 mouse model of Down syndrome
1 INTRODUCTION Trisomy 21, or Down syndrome (DS), is a condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21). People with DS are born with congenital abnormalities that involve many organ systems including the heart and lungs.1 In the middle of the last century, the life expectancy for people with DS was ~ 12 years. Due to tremendous progress in medicine and changes in social attitudes, life expectancy for persons with DS is now greater than 60 years of age.
