Remembering the epic triumph of the Berlin Airlift
ARLINGTON, Va. • Seventy-five years ago, midway through a century marred by bloody conflict, the world faced a grave new crisis. Alarmed by the efforts of their former allies — the United States, Great Britain and France — to support the development of a free economy in a democratic West Germany, on June 24, 1948, the Soviet Union blockaded all road, rail and canal traffic of essential food, medicine and coal supplies to the free people of West Berlin and cut off electricity.

On the role of different age groups in propagating Omicron epidemics in France
Abstract Background There is limited information on the role of different age groups in propagating SARS-CoV-2 epidemics driven by the Omicron variants. Methods We examined the role of individuals in different age groups in propagating the Spring, Summer, and Autumn waves of the Omicron epidemics in France using the previously developed methodology based on the relative risk (RR) statistic that measures the change in the group’s proportion among all cases admitted to ICU for COVID-19 before vs.

The Asteroid Threat: Demonstration Missions, Asteroid Redirect, and the Big Picture
It’s all well and good to debate how we might deflect an asteroid, but there is no substitute for actual in-space experience. Fortunately, we are starting to get some. On July 3, 2005, after a 267 million mile journey, NASA’s Deep Impact spacecraft launched an 820-pound copper projectile that delivered the equivalent of 4.7 tons of TNT while striking comet 9P/Tempel.
On the effect of age on the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in households, schools and the community
Abstract Background: There is limited information on the effect of age on the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection in different settings, including primary, secondary and high schools, households, and the whole community. We undertook a literature review of published studies/data on detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection in contacts of COVID-19 cases, as well as serological studies, and studies of infections in the school setting to examine those issues.
Projecting the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 through the postpandemic period
What happens next? Four months into the severe acute respiratory syndrome–coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak, we still do not know enough about postrecovery immune protection and environmental and seasonal influences on transmission to predict transmission dynamics accurately. However, we do know that humans are seasonally afflicted by other, less severe coronaviruses. Kissler et al.

Projecting the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 through the postpandemic period
Abstract It is urgent to understand the future of severe acute respiratory syndrome–coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission. We used estimates of seasonality, immunity, and cross-immunity for betacoronaviruses OC43 and HKU1 from time series data from the USA to inform a model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. We projected that recurrent wintertime outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 will probably occur after the initial, most severe pandemic wave.

Temporal rise in the proportion of both younger adults and older adolescents among COVID-19 cases in Germany: evidence of lesser adherence to social distancing practices?
Abstract Background: There is uncertainty about the role of different age groups in propagating the SARS-CoV-2 epidemics in different countries, particularly under current social distancing practices. Methods: We used the Robert Koch Institute data on weekly COVID-19 cases in different age groups in Germany.
Projecting the transmission dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 through the post-pandemic period
Abstract There is an urgent need to project how transmission of the novel betacoronavirus SARS-CoV-2 will unfold in coming years. These dynamics will depend on seasonality, the duration of immunity, and the strength of cross-immunity to/from the other human coronaviruses. Using data from the United States, we measured how these factors affect transmission of human betacoronaviruses HCoV-OC43 and HCoV-HKU1.

The Asteroid Threat: The Search for City and Planet-killers
On May 31 asteroid 1998 QE2 – not named after the cruise ship, but nine Queen Elizabeth 2 ship-lengths in size – had a not-so-close encounter with Earth. The asteroid benignly passed by our planet at 15 times the distance between Earth and the moon.
Last Ship from Vietnam: Interview with Cmdr. Jonathan Malay, USN (Ret.)
Cmdr. Jonathan Malay is one of the most respected people in the aerospace and meteorology community. A naval oceanographer and meteorologist who became a specialist in space programs, he’s helped to advance NASA’s and NOAA’s space exploration and research programs through his work at Ball Aerospace and Lockheed Martin. He’s also served as the president of both the American Astronautical Society and the American Meteorological Society and co-authored the National Geographic Encyclopedia of Space.
Rise in mortality involving poisoning by medicaments other than narcotics, including poisoning by psychotropic drugs in different age/racial groups in the US

NACA: Helping to Win World War II
A few months after the D-Day invasion, Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Dwight Eisenhower and his son John – then an Army second lieutenant – walked along the Normandy beaches and pondered the course of the war. “You’d never get away with this if you didn’t have air supremacy,” the son told his father.

Four months after the Soviet Union shocked the United States on Oct. 4, 1957, by launching Sputnik 1, the first Earth-orbiting satellite, and three months after they doubled down on this Cold War victory in the space race by launching Sputnik 2 (carrying the dog Laika), and eight days after the United States finally got into this highest-stakes Cold War game when the Army Ballistic Missile Agency satellite Explorer 1 made it into orbit, our country established its first real space agency.
ISS and the Emerging Space Economy
When President Ronald Reagan directed NASA to build a “permanently manned space station,” he stated in his 1984 State of the Union Address that this initiative would “build on America’s pioneer spirit” and lead to peaceful, economic, and scientific gain.
John C. Mather: NASA’s Nobel Laureate
By Edward S. Goldstein In 2006, John C. Mather, a senior astrophysicist and project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, became the first NASA civil servant to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics. Mather was recognized, along with George F. Smoot of the University of California, for the “discovery of the black body form and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation.” This work helped validate the big-bang theory of the universe.
Commentary: Using multistrategy credit to navigate a booming market
The demand for corporate credit shows no sign of abating, with the record year of loan issuance in 2017 potentially leading to an all-time peak in 2018 in volume terms for high-yield markets. Leveraged credit meets a keenly felt need among investors in the present climate for yield, making it a borrower's market. Is there still room for investors to make good risk-adjusted returns in private credit? If so, ought they, broadly speaking, to buy the same sorts of credits as everyone else?
Aerospace & Defense Service Providers: Vital Contributors to the Industrial Base
The following interview is an excerpt from the Spring 2018 Edition of AIA’s Executive Report. To view more articles and commentary, click here. Today, services companies and services units within major primes provide vital support both to commercial aerospace enterprises and the federal government. They help maintain military readiness, ensure the safety of our air transportation system, and support NASA and NOAA missions.
