You can only hail the golden, self-driving ‘cabs a specific Texas city, but it’s a start... Buried in the deluge of tech announcements at Tesla’s “Cybercab Launch Day” rollout of its newest product, a steering-wheel free, two seat autonomous taxi, was the news that the service will be available to paying customers in Austin, Texas, as of Friday, September 4th, at 5pm local time.

Tesla’s two-seat robotaxi uses cameras only, gold plastic body panels, and a geofenced app-based service. In a 2014 interview in the Wall Street Journal, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the technology for a fully autonomous car would be ready in “five or six years.” That did not come to pass, as it would take fully 10 years for Tesla to announce Cybercab, its vision for a fully autonomous vehicle.
