Meiotic commitment: More than a transcriptional switch
Summary Commitment to cellular differentiation programs can be controlled by self-activating transcription factors that trigger the expression of cell-type-specific genes. A new study shows that, although commitment to meiosis in yeast is controlled in this manner, additional signaling interactions promote the committed state.

Can We Have Cocktail Hour BEFORE the Ceremony?
Weddings tend to follow a fairly set order of events: You get ready in the morning, have your ceremony in the afternoon, and then proceed to cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, and the afterparty. Looking to shake things up (and maybe get the party started sooner)?
Can Your Wedding Officiant Just Skip Over That Whole "Speak Now or Forever Hold Their Peace" Thing?
If your wedding is actually a rom-com, you can probably guess when the pivotal moment will take place: As soon as the officiant turns to the gathered guests and says that, if anyone objects to the marriage, they should speak now or forever hold their peace. After brunch with their perspective matches in Hoboken, New Jersey, Emily made her move to switch dates over a game of Pictionary at their mutual friend's apartment. It worked—and just over three years later, on May 29, 2016, Eric proposed at Chelsea Piers, the site of their first official date (with each other!).

Edward Winter presents: Unsolved Chess Mysteries (7)
Unsolved Chess Mysteries (7) By Edward Winter A game attributed to Albert Einstein Our fifth ‘Chess Mysteries’ article noted that the Dictionnaire des échecs by François Le Lionnais and Ernst Maget (Paris, 1967) reproduced from Freude am Schach by Gerhard Henschel (Gütersloh, 1959) a game purportedly won by Stalin, and that the Dictionnaire expressed some doubt about its authenticity. Strange to say, exactly the same occurred regarding a game attributed to Einstein.
