Kleptocracy at the Polls
At long last, Europe is waking up to the menace of kleptocracy. The war on Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s mafia state and a series of high-profile corruption scandals on the continent have finally convinced European elites of the fundamental threat to democratic governance, national security, and economic prosperity posed by foreign kleptocratic actors.

Bulgaria has usually been viewed as one of the most corrupt states in the European Union. This has often been blamed on Russian influence, and it continues to challenge the country’s democracy. Despite this, Sofia now does seem to be making progress in tackling these closely connected problems. November 13, 2023 - Eguiar Lizundia Graham Scott
We need to safeguard democratic legislatures against kleptocracy Original
Nearly everywhere in the world, legislatures are consistently the least popular branch of government — a fact that has been exacerbated in recent years by polarization and gridlock, and which is often underpinned by the sense that representatives are corrupt and ineffectual. Authoritarian powers — including adversaries such as China and Russia — have sought to exploit this vulnerability to entrench their own malign influence and undermine democratic institutions.
España no es Polonia
“Deriva polaca del Poder Judicial.” “Refinamiento golpista propio de Hungría o Polonia.” “Sánchez imita a Orbán.”
A wealth of opportunities: Public real estate management as a tool for good governance
Also available in Spanish How much are the government buildings, lands and other publicly-owned real estate of your country worth? According to recent publications, a lot. A 2013 IMF study estimated that non-financial assets are worth an average of 67 percent of the GDP of a selection of 32 countries. More recently, a book by Dag Detter and Stefan Fölster underscored the incredible potential of improving public wealth management.
Deploying the Democratic Arsenal Against Kleptocracy
Democracy is under assault across the globe. This democratic recession has been building for over a decade but has worsened as autocrats, often backed by China or Russia, violently suppress their people and corrode independent institutions. From Belarus to Cambodia, tyrannical leaders are pulling out all the stops to stay in power. But they have an Achilles’ heel: their reliance on state-sponsored corruption and their people’s growing outrage about it.
Want the Summit for Democracy to develop solutions? Include local governments
The Biden administration has committed to organizing a “Summit for Democracy” to galvanize support for combating authoritarianism, fighting corruption so often associated with autocracy, and advancing human rights. The global gathering is part of the president’s stated goal of placing democracy and human rights at the heart of his foreign policy. Crafting the invite list will be one of the thorniest elements of organizing the forum.

The Fight Against Kleptocracy Should Look Beyond the West
The global movement to combat kleptocracy has wind in its sails. With its sights set on curbing this most pernicious form of corruption – often referred to as “rule by thieves” – Congress, in December last year, passed the Anti-Money Laundering Act that makes it difficult for foreign autocrats to hide money in U.S. shell companies. In Europe, moves are underway to tighten the grip in a similar manner.
Strengthening citizen-centered governance should be a core element of the Biden administration’s democracy agenda
There are indications that President-elect Joe Biden intends to make supporting democracy a key element of his administration’s foreign policy. This is a pragmatic decision based in an understanding of national interest that recognizes that threats to democracy overseas imperil U.S. security and prosperity at home.
One of the best ways the US can counter Russia and China has nothing to do with the military
The US's shift to "great power competition" has mainly focused on the military aspects of the rivalry with Russia and China. But those countries are expanding their influence in large part through corruption, which the US should target in order to counter them. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Is Systemic Corruption Driving Violent Extremism?
In recent years, high-profile corruption scandals have unleashed a wave of popular protests against politicians across the world.
