Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Making "informative synthesis" for decision makers –before internet. We started at 5am cutting and pasting news (w/ scissors and glue).

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I used a computer for the first time in 1995, when I was 25.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lois Lane.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be sensitive enough to understand the world, and fair enough to tell it in an accurate way.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter.

Who do you wish followed you?

Decision makers. I think that when we talk about immigration, they only read and hear what they want.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I wanted to understand why.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The story of Dreamers. I started following them and doing interviews way before this became a "newsworthy" issue –and wrote a book about it.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read, read, read, write, repeat.

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In my phone, or reading a print magazine or book.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The New Yorker.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That immigration = problem. Is common in media to talk about immigrants or immigration as something that has to be solved or "fixed".
