Dr. Elaine Maimon is an educator, author, and former university president with a record of promoting transformational reform in higher education.

She began her career as an English professor at private liberal arts colleges, where she orchestrated one of the nation’s first writing-across-the-curriculum programs. This interdisciplinary work eventually led her to the position of Associate Dean of the College at Brown University.

Aug. 06, 2026 In the 1740s, when Benjamin Franklin established the “Public Academy of Philadelphia” — the University of Pennsylvania’s 18th century name — he set out to do something new. Rather than following Harvard’s model of preparing elite citizens for the clergy, Franklin asserted that Penn’s guiding principle would be that knowledge should serve society, connecting the theoretical and the practical, career training and preparation for living a responsible civic life.

“Tell me about a complicated man,” writes Emily Wilson, the College for Women Class of 1963 Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, in her 2017 translation of Homer’s The Odyssey. Wilson’s English translation — the first ever by a woman — is the basis for Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film, The Odyssey. According to W. W. Norton, Wilson’s translation has sold a million copies just since the film came out on July 17.
