1 Introduction Patient and public involvement (PPI) primarily concerns research being conducted ‘with’ or ‘by’ patients and members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them [1, 2]. It is being increasingly recognised as essential in health research [3], leading to more inclusive and impactful results [4, 5] as well as empowerment of PPI contributors.
