1. Introduction Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide (1). Nearly two-thirds of strokes are produced by cardioembolisms (2). Cardioembolic strokes are caused by blood clots that form in the heart, due to disease (e.g., atrial fibrillation) or a cardiac intervention (e.g., transcatheter aortic valve replacements or left atrial appendage occluders), and travel through the bloodstream into the brain.
