Editor’s summary Peripheral nerve injury divides severed axons into a proximal fragment, which remains connected to the neuronal cell body, and a distal fragment that is detached from the cell body. Whereas the distal fragment undergoes rapid degeneration mediated by SARM1, the proximal fragment remains intact and initiates axon regeneration. In Sarm1-deficient mice, injury-induced growth programs in the neuronal cell body are overactivated.
