A longstanding connection with Salt Lake City’s prominent Eccles family was the unlikely source of one of Washington H. Soul Pattinson’s most profitable trades last year. The Australian investment company earned a 30% profit on the Nasdaq listing of a US drive‑through coffee chain, Black Rock Coffee Bar which came to market backed by Cynosure Partners, the private capital arm of the Eccles-founded firm. “We never want to be boring,” says Soul Patts chief executive Todd Barlow.
