SAN FRANCISCO -- Meta on Friday paused a new artificial intelligence feature on Instagram that allowed users to generate images based on people's public accounts, citing widespread criticism. The feature, which Meta unveiled Tuesday, automatically opted in any Instagram user with a public account. As a result, countless people's likenesses were used in AI images without their consent. Users complained about privacy and copyright concerns.

How to prevent Meta from using your Instagram images in AI

SEATTLE - When Meta unveiled an artificial intelligence image generator called Muse Image recently, it came with a feature that let users create AI images based on people's Instagram photos. Any adult with a public Instagram account was automatically opted in. Using the Meta AI app, the company's stand-alone chatbot, other users could pull from “part or all of your published photos” to create new AI images, the company wrote in a blog post.
