Making cents of artificial intelligence: How it can work for you
Every few months, a new technology arrives with a claim on agriculture. Some of it changes how farms operate. Some of it passes through. Artificial intelligence (AI) is usually discussed through the tools it may bring to the farm: sensors, software, dashboards, decision support. That is only part of the picture. AI also depends on infrastructure being built outside the farm, and data centres are the clearest example. A data centre is a facility filled with servers that store and process data.
AI may be digital but it still eats up real land, economist says
This story was first published on RealAgriculture.com on May 9, 2026. In the rural municipality of Rosser, just outside Winnipeg, a 94,000 square-foot canola and pea processing facility is being converted into a Bell Canada AI data centre. The building was completed in 2021. Merit Functional Foods, which built the facility with more than $100 million in federal financing, went into receivership in 2023, unable to compete with low-priced pea protein imports from China.
How NATO’s Innovation Lift Could Reshape Canada’s R&D System
Innovation as strategic capital NATO members are placing increasing emphasis on science, technology and industrial capability as part of collective defence. The recent commitment by allies to move toward defence spending of 5% of GDP, including higher levels of research, development and industrial investment, reflects a recognition that technological advantage affects deterrence, economic resilience and the ability to operate in contested environments.
Trusted site readiness: Canada’s edge in a shifting global FDI landscape
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), defined as an investment where a person or company from one country acquires 10% or more of the voting shares, or equivalent ownership of a business enterprise in another country, is central to Canada’s long-term competitiveness. Trusted, high-quality FDI strengthens economic resilience by anchoring supply chains, transferring technology, and building local expertise that endures through global shocks.
NATO’s Resilience Agenda and Canada’s Agri-Food Reliability
Imagine a coordinated cyberattack takes down the Port of Vancouver’s logistics systems. Ships can’t unload. Trains can’t be loaded. Grain shipments to Asia stop dead, and critical imports can’t get through. This scenario illustrates the kind of real-world threat that NATO now considers a core security challenge, compelling Canada and its allies to rethink the very meaning of national security.
Quantifying changes in the environmental impact of in-crop herbicide use in Saskatchewan, Canada
Materials and Methods This research aims to calculate the field use environmental impact quotient (EIQ-FU) for herbicides used postemergence in the crop rotation periods of 1991 to 1994 and 2016 to 2019. The EIQ, a comprehensive tool developed by Kovach et al. (Reference Kovach, Petzoldt, Degni and Tette1992), evaluates the environmental impacts of pesticides. It encompasses three key components: farmworker impact, consumer impact, and ecological impact.
